Q&A

What is Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)?

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is an environmental policy that requires producers to take responsibility for the entire life cycle of the goods they place on the market, i.e. from the design of the goods to the end of their life cycle (including waste collection and disposal). Under EPR regulations, the responsible parties must reduce the environmental impact of their goods throughout their life cycle.

What will happen if I cannot provide my EPR number?

If you are unable to demonstrate to the sales platform that you are in compliance with the EPR requirements, the sales platform will take the following actions.

Germany: The Sales Platform will be obliged to suspend your non-compliant products posted under the EPR product categories.
Packaging: All items from 1 July 2022 onwards

Why would a sales platform ask you for a German EPR number?

From 2022 onwards, if you want to sell goods in Germany, the sales platform will be obliged to verify that you meet the requirements of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in the country where you are selling the goods. The sales platform will therefore collect and verify your EPR registration number.

Who is responsible for EPR?

The producer is the first party to place goods that need to meet the requirements of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in a country/region (Germany) (see below for the EPR classification of goods) in that country/ region. You are a "producer" if you manufacture goods in the respective country/region that are subject to the EPR requirements, or if you import into the respective country/region goods that are subject to the extended producer responsibility requirements, or if you sell goods subject to the extended producer responsibility requirements in the respective country/region and you are not incorporated in that country/region.

What do I need to do?

If you are the producer of goods covered by the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements, you will be obliged to provide the sales platform with your EPR registration number. For goods covered by the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) requirements in France and Germany, you will need to provide the sales platform with your EPR registration number.

I am a self-delivery seller, does this apply to me?

Yes, Amazon must confirm that all sellers are compliant with the Extended Producer Responsibility requirements, regardless of whether you are using Amazon Logistics or seller self-delivery.

When will I be affected?

Before releasing goods in France and/or Germany, producers must ensure that they complete the EPR registration process and obtain EPR registration numbers for all applicable EPR commodity classifications.

Do I need to register for different countries and different EPR product categories?

Yes, there are different registration requirements, registration processes and authorised bodies for each country for the EPR product categories sold on amazon.de and amazon.fr.
